My mentor - My Brother Ed - R.I.P.

MANY years ago I got involved with Community Access Television through Rogers Cable in Vancouver. My brother Ed got me interested and we ended up producing a one-of-a-kind brand of comedy series called "Spacific Enigma."

It was an enigma. We ran 3 seasons and won an award for our efforts. It was the best of times, the best place to cut our teeth. I knew squat about film making and Ed had studied at Sheridan College in Oakville ON. It launched my career in film.

Stanley Kubrick was our hero. Best film maker period. We often talked about his body of work. One eve I surprised Ed with a little meeting with R. Lee Ermey, the genius behind "Gunnery Sgt. Hartman" in Full Metal Jacket. Ermey was in town filming "Willard" and a buddy hooked us up for a beer at his hotel. It was as close to Kubrick my bro and I ever got and it was AWESOME.

Ed passed away suddenly last Sunday. He was my mentor. In honour of Ed, our fledgling years together and our passion for brilliant film makers like Kubrick, I leave you with this clip from Full Metal Jacket.
